MIDDLE SCHOOL MATHEMATICS

Middle School Math
Prerequisite:  Math placement test
This class’s goal is to provide a firm foundation for Saxon 8/7 or Pre-Algebra.  Topics covered include:  fractions, decimals, word problems, simple geometry, integers, factorization, ratios, rates, percents, proportions, exponents, inequalities, graphing, and equations.  This class is for the student who could use review on fundamentals of math with an emphasis on computation.  Having the multiplication tables memorized before taking this class is strongly suggested.

Saxon 8/7
Prerequisite:  Math placement test
This course contains arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) using whole numbers, fractions, and integers. Also included are fundamental topics of geometry, measurement, Algebra, and graph reading. This class is intended for the advanced middle schooler and moves quickly through new concepts.

Pre-Algebra
Prerequisite:  Math placement test or completion of Saxon 87 with C or better or teacher recommendation
This course contains linear equations, linear equalities, absolute value, word problems, positive and negative exponents, polynomials, binomials, trinomials, factoring polynomials, quadratic equations, rational expressions, fractional equations.

Algebra I
Prerequisite:  C or better in Pre-Algebra
The solution of linear equations and inequalities together with the graphing of linear functions forms the core of the course.  Polynomial operations and factoring are thoroughly developed and applied to algebraic fractions.  Within the structure of the real number system, students are introduced to systems of linear equations, radical equations, quadratic equations, and fractional equations. Word problems are used throughout the course to relate algebra to everyday situations and to develop problem-solving skills.
